Piper

To the Crew at Julie’s Friends:

I am writing to you to give a first hand account of the difference you have made for the golden retriever, Piper.

I had gone to north Denver to pick up a dog from “Golden Girls Kennel”. I had read her profile and knew that at 5 years old, she didn’t deserve to be shipped off to a commercial breeding facility in Florida. She deserved to have a loving family to enjoy for the rest of her life on this earth. When I was up there meeting this dog, I met Piper. She was depressed; wouldn’t make eye contact, would not stand up in the house and would cower when you tried to pet her and did her best to be as small as possible. I asked the breeder about her and why they were getting rid of her and she said “oh she had a false pregnancy and we had to give back many deposits to angry customers”…AS IF PIPER COULD CONTROL THAT!! They also told me that Piper was constantly getting “beaten up and attacked” by the other dogs. I witnessed this first hand. They already had placed a deposit on another dog, a “more reliable dog” and they were in talks with an Oklahoma commercial breeder to take Piper as a breeding dog.

I knew at that moment that Piper was coming with us one way or the other. I found a woman that I trust more than anything and asked her if she would be willing to open her heart and home to this poor girl. Without hesitating she said yes forever. She was trying to figure out how to pay all of the costs to get her out of the current situation and getting her healthy while being on a fixed income herself.

I contacted Julie’s Friends to ask if they could help, and the response was and immediate and resounding yes! They knew this dog would be sold off to be used as a breeder for many more years and that it was a race against time to save her from a terrible fate of being crated and bred over and over again for the rest of her life. It was also very obvious that the dog was fading away as a result to the constant attacks by her fellow dogs, and also the neglect of her “owner”.

Because of Julie’s Friends, we brought Piper home. When she first went with her new owner, she wouldn’t make eye contact and would lay curled in a ball. She had never had a dog bed to lay on and was terrified of everything, especially the TV. Piper was not a pet, she was a financial payday and when she stopped producing, she was sold off like used goods.

Julie’s Friends arranged for vet care to be provided for a year and when Piper went to the vet (who specializes in Goldens), he told her owner that this dog “was beyond lucky”. What the breeder said was a false pregnancy was actually a severe infection that went undetected for MONTHS because her previous owner NEVER, NEVER in five years, took her to the vet for wellness checkups. Had she gone to a different home, she would have died within a month or two.

After just ONE WEEK with her new owner, Piper is a completely different dog. She loves to play, brings her ‘babies’ to her dog bed (which she loves!) and explores her backyard with her lab sister. The “inexplicable” discharge has cleared up and you can see in Piper’s eyes how much better she feels. She has realized that humans are good and that other dogs are friends. She craves the attention of her new dog mom and explores her world with growing confidence.

While she has a long way to go, Piper is exceeding all expectations. Her new mom hopes that one day, Piper can be an ambassador for Julie’s Friends and the crucial and truly life-saving work your organization does.

Without Julie’s Friends Piper would have been shipped off and her infection would have killed her. Thank you for stepping in and saving Piper!!
